An Austin Healey Bugeye restoration project is not as difficult as one might think. While it is true this car was produced over 50 years ago, there are an ample number of enthusiasts that have kept the cars and supply of parts for them alive over the years.

This car only had a production life of three years from 1958 until 1960, but it made a lasting impression on the world of automobiles that has lasted the test of time. Nearly 38% of all Sprites that were produced in the 13 years life span of the car were of the first Bugeye model.

The official name of this car was the Austin Healey Sprite AN5 Mark I. But because of its looks, the term Bugeye was the nickname the Americans called it and Frogeye was the term in England.

The body and frame of the car was a first for an English sports car being of unibody construction. Unlike other restoration projects where the body is taken off the frame for dipping, the frame is the body. Because of the way the Bugeye was conceived, it only had 4 body and frame components. The front fenders and bonnet were one piece, there were 2 doors, and then the remainder of the floor and body was all one piece. The trunk lid was eliminated from the original design to help with the structural integrity of the car as a whole. This also reduced the noise of loose body joints because there were so few.
