Keeping the Family’s Cars on the Road

Life is spread out, we work, go to school, shop, play, commute, and with those activities stretching across several miles we each need a car in good running order. When our 17 year old son got his license he was so excited about the prospect of driving, of the freedom that would bring. He forgot about insurance, gas, maintenance, taxes and registration costs. We have helped him with insurance and some maintenance, but it is expensive to keep a car chugging down the highway. Before our children got their licenses I thought it was crazy that people bought cars for their teen drivers. But after the third scrap and bump on my car, I decided it was much cheaper to buy them their own older car then the repairs on my newer car. They could learn to drive in their own car, stress the transmission and play bumper cars with curbs and post and leave my car nice and intact.

Several times we have had to take our teen cars to Austin transmission shops to get things back in alignment so they could continue their trek to work and school. We visit repair shops, transmission shops, and have taught them simple maintenance like brake repairs and changing their oil and replacing fluids. With car ownership comes responsibility, both financial and otherwise. It is a good thing for kids to learn. We all have places to go, things to do and people to see, we all have cars to keep repaired and drivable. We are keeping America’s highway’s busy each with our own form of transportation.
